FOG: An Anaysis of Catholic Dogma
Published in Paperback by Proctor Pubns (31 May, 1999)
Author: Garland Jaggers
Average review score:

The World Around the Corner
Garland Jaggers takes us from his tiny neighborhood into the recesses of the Roman catholic inner sanctum where very few lay African Americans had been prior to that time. We follow his school years in parocial school and share his disappointment in finding out that his High School lacked acreditation as he tried to enter College. His life after college shows a genuine desire to rise above the past short falls that he has been dealt as he advances in his career in social work. He gives us insights into his family life and the great affection that he holds for those people so dear to him. We wish that more had been developed with these members in his story but the story is indeed his. For a non catholic, the heart of the book reveals mysteries and answers questions that cannot be found in most religiously oriented writing. The playful antics of the alter boys, the decisions from Rome and how they impact upon everyday life for each parishioner. We see these thing from the inside looking out for a change. Jaggers move back into the church as an administrator seems to justify, in his mind, the faith that his parents had displayed in wanting him to have a "better" education then his neighborhood peers. It also seemed to be a way for himself to give the Catholic Church another chance to meet his expectations. It finally becomes evident that although times change and hopes soar, success is more of a journey rather then a goal. The positions held by Jaggers and his advisers in the church hierarchy were just that__advisory and disappointment in the church is met once again. The conclusion in no way takes away from the narrative that guides us through the meetings with the Cardinal and his Bishops. We have a better feel for the policy making process and the relative importance of certain individuals.

The Garlands Of Rampur
Published in Hardcover by Pentland Press, Inc. (1998)
Author: Jill Cartwright
Average review score:

Tales of A British Family in WWII India
The author gives us a look at what life was like for her family stationed with the British Civil Service in India during WWII. Her mother kept fine records and journals of their travels and adventures while managing a home, husband, children, pets and servants under difficult circumstances. She was able to do it with quite a bit of humor and resourcefulness. The variety of characters and events chronicle an interesting account of a time and place in recent history that no longer exists.

Gloucester on the Wind: America's Greatest Fishing Port in the Days of Sail (Images of America)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 April, 1995)
Author: Joseph E. Garland
Average review score:

Fascinating Photo History
A lot of information, mostly very interesting and well-presented. It's appeal is quite general, to anyone interested in colorful local history and the sea, not just to those with esoteric fascinations with fishing industry history or old boats. The main draw, though, is the collection of photographs, some very old, capturing a largely vanished way of life and yet showing a lot of similarities between they that go down to the sea in ships today and their ancestors. The text and photos work together beautifully to give a feeling for a very difficult way of life and the very real and ever-present danger.

The Greek Way of Life
Published in Hardcover by Duckworth (April, 1989)
Author: Robert Garland
Average review score:

social history is the focus
Social history is the focus of what is touted as a general introduction to Greek history. A good supplemental text to a class but not one to use without professor additions or another text. Has been replaced by Powell and Harris & Platzner's text books on mythology.

Hitler in Hollywood?
Interesting historical fiction about Nazi influence in the Hollywood of the World War. More than a little chilling in today's context.

History of the Lincoln County War
Published in Paperback by University of Arizona Press (September, 1997)
Authors: Maurice Garland Fulton and Robert N. Mullin
Average review score:

Detailed look at the Lincoln County War
This book is a great description of the events surrounding the Lincoln County War, which is an absolutely fascinating case study of lawlessness in the American West. Although the author's bias is clear--and probably warranted--the entire series of events is well documented and the writing very accessible. To his credit, the author refuses to fall into the trap of making Billy the Kid--who was just a minor figure--the star of the show. Billy remains a background figure almost throughout and the real players in the drama are made memorable. This book does rely very heavily on excerpts from the self-serving letter writing campaign going on during the events.
